My daughter is getting two new rabbits. They will be two females of different breeds. They’ll be around four to five months. Can I put them in a cage together for a short period of time, say a couple months? Or, if they can stay together, how long can they be in the same cage?

Yes, the rabbits will be fine together or separate. The only things you need to do are:
1.) Make sure they have enough room to move around comfortably. Also, research how big they’ll get within the time they’ll be caged together to ensure they’ll still have room a month or two down the road.
2.) Watch them to ensure their safety. You want to be sure the rabbits will get along. While having them caged inside might make a mother cringe, it might be best for the first day or two. This way you won’t have any worries about them fighting.
So long as you make sure they’re getting along and they have plenty of room, they’ll be fine. Eventually, you will want to get them their own cages. Unless they are mini lops (or another small breed.) , they’ll grow to a decent size and will need plenty of space.
As a side note, do NOT invest in one of the typical gerbil water bottles for the cage. (These are the upside down plastic bottles with the metal tube that the rabbits drink from.) Many people purchase these and it is a bad idea. It can easily chip the rabbits teeth (which will leave you with high vet bills, I assure you. Nobody wants that.) What I suggest are small plastic dog water bowls. I have 7 rabbits. (5 adults, 2 kits) and all use the water bowls with no problem. Just make sure they’re shallow as you’ll be getting babies and you don’t want the run the risk of drowning.
Good luck with your new family members!
If the cage you want to keep them in is huge.

That will be when they are reaching sexual maturity. There are chances they will mount and possibly fight to dominate. One wants to be alpha. One has to be alpha. It depends how long this will go on for; as long as it takes for one to back down of course. Rabbits are stressed easily so as long as you take them out and seperate them often they should be fine. If they continue to fight after a couple of months I would seperate them
However. Spaying will calm their hormones down and decrease the disagreements between them both.
Hope I helped!
