I ahve a 4 year old basset hound. I have always wanted a hunting dog but when we got my basset, I was too young to realize that she would be a good hunter. I would like to know the best way to train her to hunt rabbit, and is she even able to be trained at 4 years old?

I would agree with Roadhunt Rabbit hunting should be a natural trait If your Basset is naturally quick on her feet Beagles are great for chasing em down, and the basset would be great scenting and digging… If you were close to me, I would say Bring her to our local park, the rabbits are everywhere, at least you would be able to find out of she has the instinct for the job.. lol and if she’d be worth working with to get her into a training situation , I might also suggest checking sporting clubs /hunt clubs in your area where you may find folks who do hunt with dogs.. After all, 3/4 Of the dogs out there were bred To hunt and the others were bred for chicks to dress up ..lol
Buy her a playboy magazine… let her see the playmate wearing "BUNNY" sign. I’m sure she will get jealous to every bunny she meets. Anyway, happy hunting
There are trainers that deal specifically with training a dog for hunting or you could do as the above person suggested and find someone with beagles/bassets and have him learn by taking his cue from the other dogs. He’s still young enough to learn. Good luck.
Start them out at about 12 weeks old by introducing them to a rabbit inside a cage. Then as often as possible keep showing the pups the rabbit, but don’t handle the rabbit with your own hands. As time progresses the pups will want to get more "familiar" with the furry little guy. At about 6 months old drag the cage along the ground to a hidden spot let the pups get the scent from the starting point and follow the scent to the location where the rabbit is. Start rewarding them by giving them some sort of treat when they find it. At about 1 year when they find the rabbit, give them a taste of some rabbit you have purchased in the store. During this time you’ll have to get them used to the sound of a 22 rifle. then work your way up to the sound of a 12 ga. this will help prevent them from being gun shy. At about 14 months they should be ready to hunt for real.
Good luck and good hunting.

Tip: Beagles, Blue Ticks, Redbones, and Fox Hounds are best suited for this. Almost comes as a second nature to them.

how could u possibly want 2 hunt a rabbit?
my papillon chases rabbits everytime she sees one. i’m trying to train her to leave them alone.
if not instinctive to dog, i would say you would have to go to hunting school with her.
The only good way to do it is to find someone else hunting rabbits either with bassets or beagles, and take your dog along. 4 years old is not too old, since hunting is in their genes.
To the person that wants to know why you would want to hunt rabbit, my reason is "because they taste sooooo good".
