Hello! I showed rabbits in 4H when I was a kid. When you join your local club you will decide what animal project you will be doing fo the year. You will have a club leader who is an expert in a specific animal, eg: rabbits, cattle, chickens, goats etc. They will tell you where to get your livestock, how old they should be, and the preferred breeds for the local livestock shows in your area. I raised Californian rabbits.

I bought the does already bred, so they were guaranteed mommies, and they were bred at the perfect time to have babies at just the right time for the show. I had 4 does, each had 4 or five babies, and in rabbits you show a "pen of three" which should be the very best example of the breed, and the babies should look exactly alike. They judge your bunnies on size, age, temperament, condition, and how alike the are. You have to have like 10-15 bunnies to pick from so you make sure you can show the very very best. If you do breed your own rabbits you have to have a buck (male) and several doe, but it is harder that way b/c you have to worry about your does getting pregnant and having bunnies on schedule. Good luck.

Generally in 4H you show the rabbit. You don’t have to breed, but there are parts of 4H where you can breed if you want. You should be able to ask your local 4H adviser, they can help!

I would recommend getting purebred and pedigreed rabbits if possible, because these are the only rabbits that should be bred anyway (unless you intend to breed them for meat, then it doesn’t matter). Plus if you buy the best rabbits you can afford, you will do better in shows and if you decide to breed, it will be easier to sell your baby rabbits. Good luck.

The main goal is to show the rabbits and hopefully do well. It is best to get purebred, pedigreed rabbits that are good representations of the breed. The rabbit don’t have to be purebred, but it is preferred. Due to wanting quality rabbits, you should go to a breeder of the breed you want. If you are wanting to breed rabbits (you don’t have to in 4-H), then you should get a few, preferably ones that can be bred together (compatible colours for some breeds). As you are new to rabbits and 4-H, start with 1 rabbit and get more later if you want to. You do not want to be overwhelmed and decide it is too much after a few months.
Where you keep them is up to you. As you are in Texas, most people probably keep them outside. However, you can keep them inside as pets first.

I would contact the 4-H group you want to join and ask questions about it. You might want to attend a meeting before you fully commit to see if you like it and want to do it. The leader should be able to help you get a rabbit and set it up.
