Rabbit Clicker Training

in Lop Rabbits

My mini lop, Filip (zobel siamese brown, almost three years old), showing some tricks he’s learned through clicker training. The reward I give him is sunflower seeds and normal rabbit treats that you can buy in any pet store. Sunflower seeds are very fatty, though, so be careful with the amount you give! The video is shot in Sweden, which explains the weird language. All I’m saying, though, is pretty much “spin”, “stand” and “good” etc. At the end of the video I’m trying to teach him to lie …

@Lillable1 My rabbit does the same thing but i dont take away his food bowl just give him carrots diced really small. He scent marks the carrots sometimes and likes to scent mark my knee :| where i live rabbits have to usually be under 3years old to eb neutered because they can ie from the op.

No, Filip is not neutered yet. I might do it by spring, though, cause he recently got a little guinea pig friend and by spring he can get quite a handful with all his attempts to mate with everything. You should never starve a rabbit, though, but I can understand your situation. But what’s in his food bowl? He shouldn’t get more than a handful pellets per day, and the rest of the time, he should just have hay in his cage. Maybe he’s getting too much other foods that’s making him not want treats?

My rabbit is 4.5months, he’s also a mini-lop and he has the attention span of a Pea :]
I have to starve him for 2 hours (Take away his food bowl) before he will do tricks for diced apple and sunflower seeds, he cares more about scent marking the whole house.
Is Filip Neutered?

No problem. :) Good luck and write later and tell me how it went! :)

Thank you, it is very cool how you trained your rabbit. I am just going to recreate the sound using some sort of tool i guess maybe a clothes pin or something. Thank you for helping!

Falker121 01.14.10 at 6:03 am

Can I teach my bunny without a clicker but use my mouth to make a different sound?

wolfhalen 01.14.10 at 6:03 am

så himla coolt!! :-D var himla kul att se faktiskt. men hur tusan får du honom att förstå vad ligg betyder? ska nog testa att börja klicker träna mina kaniner

This is how I am training my mini lop too. Funny how they will do anything for treats! My netherland dwarf is clicker trained but he is so much more pickey with his treats so it took so much longer! :)

Elleningers 01.14.10 at 6:03 am

men gud nice hade ingen aning om att man kunde lära kaniner saker:)!

Tinwelende 01.14.10 at 6:03 am

Yes, you can. He might be a little bit more unfocussed, though, since he’s so young, so keep the training sessions really short, and don’t force him to do anything. Good luck! :)

Thanks and 1 last question:)
Can i teach my rabbit even though hes 10 weeks old?

Tinwelende 01.14.10 at 6:03 am

It took him maybe two or three practices (of 5-10 minutes each) spread out on two days. They understand it quite fast. It’s the training of the tricks that takes time. ;)

pan180 01.14.10 at 6:03 am

Hi again
How long did it take filip to understand how the clicker works?

pan180 01.14.10 at 6:03 am

Thanks alot
Im going to start tomorrow.

Tinwelende 01.14.10 at 6:03 am

To circle, I used “luring”, with means I hold the treat in my hand and puts my hand to the side of his head and as he turns his head I click and give him the treat. Then you just progress from there, and make the circle more and more complete. In the end it’s enough that you just circle your hand above him and he understands what to do. To lay down, I wait until he’s tired and I know in advance that he’s going to lay down. Then I click right as he does it. That one take a bit more time to teach.

pan180 01.14.10 at 6:03 am

Ok Thanks
He understands now what it means but how did you teacch your rabbit to circle and lie down. Many thanks again.

Tinwelende 01.14.10 at 6:03 am

Make him understand what the clicker means first off. Spend quite a lot of time on just clicking and giving him a treat right after, even though he hasn’t done anything. Then decide what you want him to do. Then you click for any single little movement towards the right, desired behaviour. Try to progress in small steps rather than in long steps, and have short training sessiongs, since rabbits get tired and unfocussed quickly. 5 minutes at the time is enough. And have patience. ;) Good luck!
