What can I do about a pet store who treat rabbits badly?

in Questions about Rabbits

Every time I go to this pet store i find something new. First I hate the fact that they keep breeding rabbits, and second when I go there I always leave the store telling the people who work there to give them water because the water bottle is OUTSIDE the cage, or to care for a rabbit who is BLEEDING out of his nose….It makes me so sad, I want to go there and love the rabbits but I feel like I can't even go inside anymore because of this stupid people who work and own the place. What should I do??? I want what's best for the rabbits, they are so cute and they treat them so bad :( they don't even have hay or anything. Just guinea pig's food. Any ideas?

In Pennsylvania, it's the Department of Agriculture that regulates live pet sales, kennels, etc.

Our local SPCA will only deal with hoarders, cruelty on an individual level. They tell people to call Agriculture Deparment about commercial complaints. Maybe your's is better than ours.

report them to the proper authorities. that's just sad and disgusting.

ASPCA or the Animal Police

jveretto0804 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

Do the right thing – put them out of their misery. Purchase, fry, and enjoy.

SuperDog246 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

You could try to report them to PETA, or call the local Humane Society and ask what you should do. I wonder also if you could call the local animal control agency and ask them to look into it.

Sammielynn 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

Call the state on their A**

sissytwo 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

immediately contact your local human society or SPCA

radio 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

Call your state house and ask the operator which department handles these types of complaints. Call the ASPCA and PETA too. Good for you! Bunnies are great friends and should be treated with dignity!!

sd s 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

Report it to the SPCA or the police and they will straighten it out.

Samantha S 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

Report them to the SPCA.

nosleepthree 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

Call the Humane Society or the SPCA. Chances are they'll either have a division who can go take care of the problem, or they'll tell you who you need to call.

Thank you for caring about those rabbits.

aotea s 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

Report them to the R.S.P.C.A or the Animal League. They will remove them and report the owners. Also there should be a fine.
rtake photographs next time your in there. Its proof. to show what they have to endure.

dancer.4ever 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

Report it

Sarafinna 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

sadly these rabbits are probably sold for food for other animals therefore they dont care too much as long as they are kept alive. you could contact your local humane society or take a long shot and contact the ASPCA. don't give up and not do anything, these creatures need our help and us animal lovers have to be their voices. good luck and be tough!!!!

You story makes me so angry and happy that you care! I would contact the local SPCA or Animal Control If you can't find one, call your police and see if they can give you a name.
This situation makes me so angry and it can be stopped, but often only temporarily and they start up again. I make a point of not giving those pet stores that sell bunnies any of my business and I let them know why.

Look up the phone number of your local Humane Society or ASPCA office and give them a call. They will send an officer out to inspect conditions at the pet store, and cite the owners if necessary. Then they will re-check the store at a later date, and if conditions have not improved, the owner will be in some serious trouble.

bckizzle 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

buy all the rabits and take care of them, or give them to people you know will take care of em, or call an animal abuse place or even 911 if you feel that strongly about it.

Jo 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

Call your local Humane Society or SPCA and ask to speak with someone that takes calls for cruelty investigation. Tell them what you have seen. Be specific and talk about the times you have seen it, that it is not a one or two time thing.

Carla S 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

You could call your local newspaper or news station, sometimes local news channels do human interest stories. If that doesn't happen you need to call your local animal police (ASPCA) or whatever resources you have there.

animal_mother 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

i hate pet stores so much. i swear the people that work there are clueless and should be trained much much better. good that you are on their case though. i'm not sure who you could report them to…humane society, upper management, write an editorial in your paper. good luck. poor rabbits, and other sad animals in pet stores.

Ginger/Virginia 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

Call the local Humane Society, and they can look into the conditions. You could also report it to the local newspaper and maybe they would do an expose on it and embarrass the owner into improving conditions.
PS – if you really love rabbits, you can keep one in an apartment or house. There's a book about it called The House Rabbit Handbook. They housetrain themselves.

lizzy 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

Your county sheriff's department can tell you who to contact.

Mikey Mike 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

sounds like its time for rabbit stew

Vicki Vale 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

Omg! How awful. I would report them to animal rights activists, etc. Good Luck!

csmitty 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

I think that you should get all informatin needed concerning this store as far as address and all document all incidents that you wittnessed. It would be good to get the names of the employees there by making another visit and paying attention to their badges. A second witness would also be good to make sure that you are not the only one who noticed such behavior. And lastly report it to the animal cruiety center in your location. Look in you phone book are call a veternarian office to get the cotact number. Good luck because animals deserve love just like human.

libertydogtraining 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

1. Report them to the humane society.
2. Report them to animal control.
3. Write to your local newspaper. There is usually a section you can write to and get some attention.
4. Locate a rabbit rescue in your area, and ask for guidance/help. Maybe they can take in some of the rabbits, help funds spay/neuter or find foster homes.
5. Find some info or someone willing to educate them.
6. Take photos to show the people you report them to.
7. Journal and write down everything you see/saw to share with those you report these people to. Document dates.
8. Have another person go in and do the same.

Sorry….I just hate pet stores.

Call the Local Humane Society and ASPCA. Sometimes you really have to keep calling the authorities. If you have a chapter of "Action for Animals" where you live they will help get the right authorities there. Don't give up, please pursue the matter. I had to report neighbors who caught a groundhog with a cruel leg trap then put a plastic pail over it in 90+ heat. I kept calling all the authorities and they (the neighbors) got fined by the Humane Society, Game Commission and Local police! (Unfortunately the groundhog had to euthanized because it was so badly injured)

s1apphirewen 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

PLEASE DON'T LET THEM GET AWAY WITH THIS.
I AGREE WITH THE OTHERS CALL YOUR LOCAL HUMAN SOCIETY OR THE ASPCA AND A LOCAL VET THAT DEALS WITH RABBITS. HOW CAN PEOPLE BE SO CRUEL? PET STORES ARE THE WORSE. I'VE SEEN IT FIRST HAND. THEY SHOULDN'T LET JUST ANYONE OPEN A PET STORE, THERE SHOULD BE STRICT RULES AND GUIDE LINES. AND IF THEY DON'T ABIDE BY THEM THEY SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN IMMEDIATELY.

bookworm1171 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

Call the police or a local animal shelter. You may want to call your local newspaper too and tell them exactly what you told us.

lissa 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

tell a humane society about this and they will do something about it,,maybe even try going into the shop everyday and take care of them yourself,…dont feel stupid cuz i had to do the same thing, the humane society will do something…good luck!

blonde_beauty 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

buy all the rabbits so they can't abuse them anymore….THEN you can call authorities…duh

lola 03.31.09 at 12:33 pm

search online for your local animal protection agency and report them,
